RANDOM POSTINGS FROM FACEBOOK, et. al.  RE: TUSCALOOSA TORNADO 4/27/2011

I apologize in advance for any links that may not work and the general disorganization of info - but its just a quick source of data I'm getting off Facebook & other sources so you can keep abreast of the current situation here. I will be posting links to major organizations with organized relief efforts as I can - i.e. American Red Cross, United Way, etc... but for those who have access to a Facebook account - the below links have been SUPER in keeping us informed - especially Clare (Stewart) Huddleston with the WVUA news, the Tuscaloosa Convention & Visitor's Bureau [ link ] and lots of others.

FINAL POSTING FROM LILLIAN-DOT-ORG . . . 6 June 2011

From the AFCA eGroup / Alabama Fire College:

*Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission*

*Statement on Fire College Operations*

*May 4th, 2011*

As the recovery from the devastating tornadoes of April 27th continues, the
Alabama Fire College is fulfilling a critical role in support of these
efforts. Our campus is currently serving as a base of operations, staging
and logistics facility for several local, state and federal agencies. This
has caused a number of modifications to our normal operations.

Please take note of the following information:

*Contacting the Fire College campus:*

To support the response and recovery efforts, several Fire College personnel
have been assigned to tasks other than their normal duties. Because
employees will be away from their normal work stations, they may be unable
to respond promptly to calls and messages. Please call 1-800-241-2467 or
1-866-984-3545 to speak to an operator in the call center. The operators
will be able to answer general information questions and distribute messages
for staff and faculty.

*Questions about testing and grades:*

For students who have recently completed classes, or who will complete a
class in the next few weeks, test processing and test results will be
delayed. Students with questions about testing issues or grades should
email their questions to testing@alabamafirecollege.org.

*Questions about on-campus class scheduling:*

While response and recovery efforts continue, on-campus class schedules will
be determined on a week-to-week basis. We will avoid unnecessary
disruptions to our regular schedule, but some classes may have to be
cancelled or relocated. In either event, students will be notified in a
timely manner of any changes in the teaching schedule.

*Questions about field classes:*

Many host departments have elected to continue with their classes as
scheduled, but some have had to cancel or postpone their plans to hold a
class. Please contact the local Course Coordinator or your AFC Regional
Staff member to determine if a scheduled field class will be held. Contact
information for Regional Staff can be found at the following link:

http://www.alabamafirecollege.org/docs/RegionalMap.pdf

*Offering assistance to AFC:*

We have received numerous offers of support and assistance from fire
departments across Alabama. Duncanville/Inglewood-Hulls VFD (Tuscaloosa
County) and Pike Road VFD (Montgomery County) have already provided crews to
support our logistical operations here on campus. As the operations continue
into the coming days, we will need additional support crews to relieve those
who are already here. Please route your offers of assistance to Melony
Carroll at mcarroll@alabamafirecollege.org. We will make best use of your
assistance without unnecessarily tying up resources.

On a final note, please remember all those who have been so greatly affected
by this disaster. The impact of this event on Alabama has been devastating,
but with your assistance and patience we will recover and move forward.

Shortly after the mile-wide Tornado, reaching 260 miles per hour, ravaged Tuscaloosa, Alabama on the morning of April 27th, animal rescuer Shannon Walker's friends and members of SMILING PITBULL RESCUE were on the scene of what was her home - now nothing but a thick pile of rubble. The group was contacted when Walker was attempting to rush home during tornado alert to check on her dogs. Walker didn't make it in time.

The band of rescuers found utter destruction, working until nightfall, digging through the debris and successfully locating all but three of Walker's dogs. Today, two more dogs were found - but one is still missing.

Walker's personal disaster spawned a Facebook page, Alabama Animals Lost & Found in The Tornadoes in Alabama, a central location to reunite lost animals with their owners. The group is also accepting donations for Have a Heart Animal Rescue and Adoption to help with medical expenses for injured animals, boarding and food. If you are interested in volunteering please email tornadopetsofal@yahoo.com.
