When the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay first started in June 1985, it was decided to meet once a week, each Saturday at 7 a.m., so this was entered in the bylaws. Have you ever wondered how many Saturday breakfast meetings there have been since June 15, 1985?
When 1999 ended, the club was 756 Saturdays old, a lot of scrambled eggs and grits. At that time, we had missed five Saturday meetings since 1985. In 1993 and 1999, Christmas and New Year's Day fell on Saturday and there were no meetings. The club also lost one Saturday because of a hurricane.
You've heard the Post Office motto, ". . . neither rain nor sleet nor dark of night . . .," but there is no mention of a hurricane. Reportedly, a bunch of Optimists was outside in the driving rain, waiting for the meeting to start inside the Lillian Community club, but the hurricane had knocked out the power so the faithful had to return home.
What dedication and let's hope it continues!
